Georgian Film Academy and Georgian Shakespeare Association PRESENTS: Film Robert Sturua (Some Scenes from the Life of a Stage Producer) by The Shakespeare’s International Society included Robert Sturua’s production of “Hamlet”, at the Riverside Studio London, in the list of ten best productions of Hamlet of the 20th century Film is about renowned Georgian theatre director Robert Sturua, who has been the Artistic Director of the Rustaveli National Theatre since 1979. He staged more than 100 productions not only at the Rustaveli Theatre but also around the world. He is famous for his staging of 17 Shakespearean plays (some of them twice) in Tbilisi, London, Tel-Aviv, Helsinki, Istanbul, Dusseldorf, Moscow, Jerusalem, Athens, Buenos Aires, Ankara, Sofia etc. The film includes Robert Sturua’s rehearsals and excerpts from his several stage productions in different countries. Behind the scenes he narrates himself how he came to the theatre, what is his method of directing, why he staged so many Shakespeare plays, why his Richard III was so successful in London, why he included scenes from the New Testament in the Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and why he decided to exclude “To be or not to be” monologue from Hamlet staged at the Rustaveli Theatre. In the movie famous composer Giya Kancheli, actors Alan Rickman and Ioseph Pollack discuss their experience collaborating with Sturua.
