Before Puck there was Plakir… Written in Dubrovnik in 1556, Marin Držić’s Plakir, Son of Cupid is a riotous pastoral comedy where mortals go elf-mad, brides chase faithless lovers through the mountains, and the courts of Love and Chastity wage war in a whirlwind of trickery and desire. Rendered into English for the first time in nearly five centuries by translator Filip Krenus, this rediscovered Renaissance jewel uncannily anticipates A Midsummer Night’s Dream: fairies meddle, hearts are misplaced, and both earthly and magical worlds tilt deliciously out of joint. This special rehearsed reading introduces audiences to one of European theatre’s lost comic treasures — mischievous, musical, and alive with verse and prose. Filip Krenus will attend to introduce the play alongside representatives of the House of Marin Držić, offering insight into the translation and the remarkable legacy of Croatia’s greatest Renaissance dramatist.
